Mischief Night

Growing up
We waited for tonight
Minor misdemeanours
Knock and run
Tying door handles
When asked why
We said it was a laugh
One night of the year
Licence to misbehave
To break every rule.

And this year it seems
The old me is back
Pushing back boundaries
Looking for trouble
For when I am told
Not to do something
I think of little else
I know you do too
You believe you can stop it
But I’d like to see you try.

(Traditionally Mischief Night is 4th November in Yorkshire)

  1. ahaa so its a tradition then! i like that Libby..one day you can just MISBEHAVE :) WELL, RULES are normally made to be broken ha! ;)

  2. This is a fun poem. Enjoyed it!

  3. Reverse psychology in action, mischievously of course. Can relate both then and now.

  4. Oh, this reminded me of "mat night". Our mischievous night of playful destruction (the playful part was only for us though...) and it happened every year on October 30.

  5. Mischief determined is mischief unstoppable. Nice one.

  6. Dear Libby
The child in oneself always looks for escape, many times in the life hence almost all the cultures have created outlets for the same... I am happy that you did let the child out, even if it was within the verse...I liked it.

  9. hope you have a great night...doesnt matter how old we get..the excitement of youth still sends tingles up my spine...now go and cause mischief...cheers pete

  10. This brings back memories from my childhood's mischief-making days. We have a traditional 'Devil's Night' on October 30th here in the U.S., but in my neighborhood the mischief went year-round.

  11. Hiding somewhere within is that little kid who yearns to be free, and get out there and paper a house or two.

  12. Haaaa, lol love it!!! You know this type was good harmless fun (the world has changed since even when I was younger) ~ This is the kind of mischief that begs for us to have a moment to act like we never grew up...always good for the soul! Loved reading this...~April

  13. i love the last line with the challenge..it's provoking in a nice and charming way

  14. Fun, naughty - in a clean-G way - work.

  15. Memories of childhood, the joy of mischeif... to be done for just one more night in our minds.
